SUPERNOVA SKA FESTIVAL QUARANTINE EDITION SUPPORTING MUSIC EDUCATION IN JAMAICA

Starting in 2020, the Supernova International Ska Festival is proud to lead a fundraising effort to assist Alpha Institute music students in Kingston, Jamaica, by raising funds for music instruments and a student scholarship including academic and vocational training as well as the social services delivered to students and their families. Led by the Sisters of Mercy since 1890, the school has changed the lives of thousands of boys who attended school while learning a trade to help them gain employment after graduation.

Music is one of those trades and the Alpha band has changed the world by producing such legendary musicians as Don Drummond, Tommy McCook, Rico Rodriguez, Lester Sterling, Johnny “Dizzy” Moore, Vin Gordon, Cedric “IM” Brooks, Yellowman, and countless others. Supernova is dedicated to continuing this legacy by supporting Alpha’s mission to provide quality academic instruction, music education and social support to today’s at risk youth in Kingston.

THE TOASTERS

All Alpha students attend on scholarship. A full scholarship is $5,500 and reflects Alpha’s holistic program which covers academic tuition, vocational training, nutrition (2 meals a day), transportation assistance, one-on-one counselling, and work experience. In order to reach our goal, 100% of all gifts will be donated directly to the Alpha Institute. Supernova is partnering with the March for Music Education to strengthen support for, and engagement with, music education in Jamaica. We are excited to deepen this relationship throughout the year with new opportunities for the Supernova Ska community to engage with the place where ska music was created.

The Alpha Institute has been crucial in shaping the lives of its students and the music of the world. Help support our efforts as we continue this important legacy in Jamaica
